Greta Thunberg yesterday joined a huge protest in the Rhineland against the expansion of a coalmine that has already swallowed 20 villages and is posing increasingly uncomfortable questions for Green members of Germany’s ruling coalition.
Braving driving rain, more than 35,000 climate activists marched through muddy countryside to the edge of the 21st target: Lützerath, a picturesque hamlet that was largely demolished last week to make way for the expansion of the massive Garzweiler II mine. As they walked, they demanded “climate justice” and chanted: “Lützi must stay.”
