The 48-year-old British actress embraced the gig in more ways than were previously even known possible. She spoke flawless French, she sang better than most (all?) of the contestants during the interval of a warm-up heat (she’s a trained singer, a veteran of musicals, the daughter and granddaughter of opera singers); she smiled and she grimaced and she laughed and she eye-rolled, she teared up, she danced, she made otherwise awkward moments comfortable and otherwise drab moments hilarious.
